Ensure a Long Life of Your House by Providing Timely Gutter Maintenance
Admin • June 1, 2018

Why do you need gutters for your house?

A roof protects your home and its contents from the effects of bad weather conditions. A good gutter system attached to it ensures that the rainwater won’t run underneath the roof and siding. Furthermore, if your house is built on a slight slope, the water may cause massive erosion and wash away soil each time it rains. Erosion will cause the foundation to settle, and, eventually, you may notice uneven floors or cracked walls. A good and properly installed gutter system will help you avoid major house repairs. However, installation is not enough for long-lasting protection. Gutters should be regularly cleaned and inspected for possible damages.

What you need to know about gutter maintenance
When was the last time you’ve inspected your home rain gutters? Half a year ago? Two years ago? Gutters are an essential part of your roof system. For this reason, they need to be regularly inspected and well-maintained because poorly managed gutters can severely damage your house. Moreover, regular maintenance will prevent landscape erosion and even provide pest control as standing water creates perfect breeding conditions for mosquitos and other insects.

Regular Cleaning

Cleaning out gutters on a regular basis will ensure excellent protection of your home and long life of your gutters. Debris put too much strain on gutters, and if they aren’t clear, they won’t properly direct the water flowing down the roof. Standing water in a gutter system can make the gutters sag and put your whole house at risk. When to clean gutters depends on how many trees you have near your house. At Home Run Improvement, we recommend to clean them twice a year: once in the fall and again in the spring. However, if you have pine trees around, you will need to do it more often as they shed a lot.

There are several ways to keep the gutters clean. You can clean them out by hand, with a blower or a power washer. The most common approach is cleaning by hand as it does not require any special equipment. All you need to have is a ladder, a bucket to put the muck into, and a pair of heavy-duty gloves. If you don’t want to dig your hand into the gutters, opt for a blower. However, if the leaves and mud in your gutters are sticky and moist, a powerful stream of air might not be enough to remove them. Cleaning with a power washer is considered to be the best approach as a powerful water stream can remove everything in its way. Moreover, you can rest assured that nothing will get stuck in your downspouts. Always keep in mind: clean gutters are happy gutters.

Gutter inspection and repair

Beside regular cleaning, gutter maintenance includes frequent inspections for possible damages and repair when necessary. Check your gutter system after each rain and see if any part of it needs fixing. Here are the most common signs indicating that your gutters need repair:
  • Fractures or cracks. Make sure that there are no visible cuts in your gutters because if there are some, the water will leak through them, and you might need to do roof fascia repair.
  • Gaps. If your gutters have large gaps, cut them out and replace.
  • Standing water. It is a sign of a blockage either in the gutter or the downspout. If you can’t spot it, you need to install a new gutter.
  • Sagging gutters. A gutter that is pulling away from the house or bowing indicates that your gutters are loose. To avoid property damage, you need to repair your drainage system.
  • Rust. Because of excessive rainfall, your gutters might become rusty. They may work for some time, but it’s always best to replace them with the new ones.
  • Mold and peeling paint. If your house peels, and you notice mold around, it means that your drainage system does not work properly.
If you ever notice these signs, don’t waste time and take immediate action. You can manage your gutters yourself, but it’s always best to refer to professionals. At Home Run Improvement, we have specialists that can install gutter guard systems and maintain a good condition of the existing ones. Whether you require cleaning or replacement, we can do the work quickly and efficiently. Give us a call and don’t worry about your house well-being when the next storm comes.
